Random question, but with the number of semi civilised and outright feral monsters in the setting, what do the basic humans do to survive?

Surround their villages with spiked pits and great big spikes? Rely on a wizard coming out to defend them?

They would indeed have defences as you suggest, but the larger monsters are rare and found in wildernesses. Humans will rarely come across them around their homes. Sometimes they will of course, in which case it's time to run to the nearest lord and ask for help from his household warriors...!

A bit like in the dark ages really, when raids occurred...
