Slinky's Darklands models
Slinky's Darklands models
I have finally put a brush to my first Darklands model, and I thought I would put a pic up here, with the aim of showing that not everyone who is painting these things is a world-class master painter! (And hopefully give some hope to the rest of us that the models can still look good with a simple and far-from-expert paintjob).
I have undercoated 4 Angelcynn models - 3 Duguth and 1 Wiglere, and made a start on the first Duguth:
I am aiming for a dirty ("dark" ages?) kind of style, so heavy washing, think it's looking okay thus far, will be interesting to see how it goes on bigger models like the Trolls.

They don't like it up 'em!
Re: Slinky's Darklands models
Nice work Pete.
As some advice, or constructive criticism if you like, when using snow make the earth darker and wetter looking. What you have there is a summer base with snow on it. The static grass you have used does not help either. Tufts are better. Use autumn or winter tufts so theyre less bright green.

Re: Slinky's Darklands models
Hmm, yeah, I see what you mean. Will probably stick with the same scheme for the rest of the unit to keep it coherent. A mysterious flurry of snow in summer announcing the arrival of Baalor's hordes, perhaps
Re: Slinky's Darklands models
Yeah, those tufts work great as dead grass on winter bases.
Re: Slinky's Darklands models
I've now ordered some of those, will scrape off the static grass and try that instead, as I agree that it will look better and more wintry.
Pics to follow as and when, but sadly that sorta takes me back to 0 finished Darklands models

Leave them until you have the new stuff in hand. Then do a quick swap!

Re: Slinky's Darklands models
The next 3 spearmen are painted and varnished, just need basing - pics to follow when they are finished.
Also, Creoda's bigger (correct) base arrived in the post yesterday, so I will rebase him before I get started.

Re: Slinky's Darklands models
Next up for the Duguth will be a spearman and the banner bearer.
Anyone got any suggestions for simple Angelcynn-correct symbols I could paint on the banner, please? I'm not a freehand master, but something simple-ish should be possible...

Looking good Slinky. I'd recommend you thin your paints a little more and try and push the contrast between shadow's and highlights. Thinned paints and a series of washes/ glazes will keep all the lovely detail of the miniatures and really improve your colour transitions.
There's tons of great sites out there that have free tutorials. I'd recommend Massive Voodoo http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.co.uk/200 ... rview.html. They have some great articles on pretty much every technique
Cheers

Re: Slinky's Darklands models
Very nice! It is always very cool to see different colour schemes on models. It might be the photo, but i would have made the mouth area a bit more desaturated (greyish pink?) and maybe the shield could be a yellow/ orange brown?
But hey, great work. Much better than I can paint, so feel free to ignore my suggestions, he he.

Thanks for commenting
I think I will add some yellow to the shield to make it a bit more distinct from the skin tone. Also, the mouth does need lots more attention, yes, that was just the base coat, will probably get a wash and then some kind of highlight, haven't decided quite what yet, will probably just try something and say "close enough"

Re: Slinky's Darklands models
really like those birdmen models, almost tempted me to norse but I resisted, intrigued to see what you do to them.
Did I see elsewhere you were listed as Bristol based? If so I'm local to you, I've still not played a game as yet but would be interested in trying it out at some point if you're up for it?

Hi!
Yes, I'm on the East edge on Bristol near Wick.
I'd deffo be up for a game at some point - I haven't read all the rules yet, I am planning to digest them once the physical book arrives - Once that happens, let's try to arrange something!
