Quick update, I toned down the flesh with Foundry Storm Green shade (Blackberry camera still makes it look more yellow than it is) and put some colour on a few bits and pieces.

Looking at the face this size, it needs some work!

Stunning bud. Really good to see these develop.

On paints, try modelsforsale.com. They usually have most of the air range in stock and they tend to have the range colour charts in stock which they'll let you have for free when you place an order for paints

OK, next batch of pics featuring a shameless reproduction of Pickster's original vane. I'm not saying it's as good though!

He is awesome but will be a challenge to paint without him looking bland as there are no discernible features other than that mouth. Skin texture is plentiful just not much to break it up. But what a mouth!!

Andy,
Thanks for sharing! Your stuff has made me incredibly glad that I added Norse to my order. I can't wait to get those big boys in and throw paint on them! Was it all airbrush work, or did you transition to standard brushes after the first few layers?

Lots of standard brushing! I am a complete novice with the airbrush so just used it to block in the colours. To avoid the nasty base coat brush marks!

Hey guys (and girls), this will be the last WIP for Gjoll the vane bearer as I'm moving on to Vortrun. That and I can't post pics of finished models just in case I fancy entering him in a comp at some point, has to be new work and all that rubbish!

So just a comparison between the nearly finished Gjoll and the airbrushed Vortrun. Gjoll has had a coat of Testors. I tried Vallejo matt in my airbrush and it clogged immediatly! I'm unhappy about that, still not managed to unclog it!

Time to attack Vortrun with some brush action!

I can't take the credit for that. Another 'homage' to Picster. Had to be blue or red really and I'd used red on the other shield!

Never used a varnish. Do you find testors dullcote gives a resilient finish. Some people have told me that I should use a gloss varnish for protection and then dullcote after to tone down the shine. Whats your experience?

If they're for display only, and I think these 2 are for Andrew, just a coat of dullcoat is enough. But for gaming pieces I'd advice to give it a coat of gloss first

Mine will be for both display and gaming (maybe!).
The primary reason for the dullcote at this stage was to take the shine off of the model and see what needs re-highlighting or shading. I find when using lots of different manufactures of paint the finishes are all different and this can distract the eye from what is painted and what is natural. Especially on a model this size.
I will probably get some more Army Painter anti-shine varnish. I think it will be resilaint enough for my needs and leavs a pretty good finish. I can always dullcote over that anyway!

I think you should push the highlights a bit more, the back looks a bit flat. The front looks a lot better with the different colours that break the big areas up. You are really close of a really awesome paintjob on the trolls, a little more work and you'r home! :)

A little more work may be required, but this model is much larger than 30mm and will look very strange if highlighted to the same degree. Some variations in hue will add some interest.

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate the interest and the input!

After all the Troll flesh on Gjoll i decided to paint the metal parts of Vortun first.

and the whole model

I forgot to get a pic of the arm piece so I'll take one later.

But now to paint more Troll flesh and maybe a striped loincloth! ;)

Vallejo model colour mostly. Applied by stippling with old drybrush. Tan for the rust and some rust pigment in IPA wash. Some dark green in there too!

Amazing work! I need to learn that stippling technique...I have a small horde of trolls coming and I would love to duplicate that scheme...or at least have mine not suck.

Also, I love that bloody sack.

The technique is too easy! Just get an old drybrush from a well known manufacturer of former greatness. Put on your paint. Wipe a good deal of it off on a cloth. Poke it at the area you want the paint on! I did use a cut off brush with harder bristles on the axe. It makes more definate lines. The old splayed out drybrush was softer so produced a softer effect. A combination of both is good!

So I am making some hammers to convert a second unit of Troll. Looks like I will have a Troll army!

Image

Just the heads so far. The middle one is pretty much done. The one on the left will be based upon Gamla Bror's hammer and the one on the right is a blob of putty on a wire! It's how they all start.

The first hammer pic is some 'rope' I made from an old mobile phone charger. This will be to bind the hammer head to the handle.

The second pic is a nearly complete 'Gamla Bror style' hammer. I'm sure there's an easier way. Maybe start by glueing some plasticard together and use putty for the final 'skin'. Oh well, I have plenty to make so I could try that next time!
