2018 - One hundred Minis Challenge

Hi all

On the podcast we discussed we discussed our plans for 2018, and our overall challenge was to paint 100 minis by the end of 2018, and I am really hoping I can get more people to join in.

the 100 minis is based on base size and unit strength, so a up to 30mm counts as 1 mini, 40mm 2 and so on.
<30mm = 1
<40mm = 2
<50mm = 3
<60mm = 4
<80mm = 6
<100mm = 10
<120mm = 12

anyone else want to join in?

Secondary to this, does anyone have any tips for a good place to host images that can then be posted onto here to keep tabs on painting challenge progress?

Hmmm... 100 minis you say..?
Does this base size chart look correct?
1: 30mm or less
2: 40mm
3: 50mm
4: 60mm
5: 80mm
6: 100mm
7: 120mm

@ Hugh B: After photobucket "changed", I just went with plain old dropbox.
Just copy the link and replace the last "dl=0" with "raw=1". Easy to manage.

Best Sven

I have updated the first post to show the mierce scale

Ninja'd. The mierce unit strength scale nets you a few more points for painting 80mm and above stuff than the scale you suggest Sven so feel free to stick to that one if you reckon you're going to be painting a lot of big monsters but ten 100mm models in a year is still quite a few so we thought the unit strength scale would be fair enough. Also thank you for the tip on the drop box.

If ever I understand how to post pictures, I'm in the challenge!

So how do we procede? Do we post pictures on this thread, or each of us create a challenge 18 related one? Sorry but could someone tell me haow to post pictures?
I chose my first target yesterday and begin on him today: a Mallox!

I use Imgur myself and it's fairly easy to use. It gives you ready image links to use on a number of platforms.
As for what to do here (unless one already exists in the painting forum), I reckon people should be able to either; Allot themselves the value of 100 minis to assemble and paint over the year, make a declaration in this thread denoting that, supplying a group shot of all of what they're going to do, or; allow simpler participation! People can come in and say, "I am going to paint this/these!" and work on this or that, making new pledges to the thread as they see fit.
Whichever way it goes, people should supply a before, during and after/finished shot of what minis they're working on. As much as to show their own progress but also, to give us all something to look at =)

How to proceed? Pretty much as you've mentioned. If each person keeps a personal tally of their model scores painted so far. If everyone is happy with the tally being on the first page, we can update the first post with a running total of who has painted what/how many points they are towards their hundred points. Pictures of progress can be posted on this thread.

https://imgur.com/a/hsYfd
let me know whether you can see this painted mallox or not...
Well, it's 10/100 for me!

Should'nt a mounted warrior give a bonus, say count the strength of the mount, as well as that of the rider, what do you think?

Hey Antoine. Yeah the pictures are coming up sharp and clear. Very nice paint job mate. Good work! Also kudos for being the first to get models done and on the thread.

With regards the mounted models, we had a chat about it last night and yes by all means feel free to total the unit strength for a mounted model. So the total points for a mounted model is the unit strength of the rider plus the unit strength of the mount.

So seven ograx riders mounted on a mammox is probably the most 'efficient' way to break the back of the painting challenge.

That's a solid five points there. Nice work mate and good basing too. How were they to paint? I'm painting druc at the moment but I've got ten of these to come in the not too distant future.

These were actually taken before I went away but I've now finished the 10 and will probably put them up later on.

I really enjoyed painting them, it's like these miniatures beg a slow, involved effort that demands attention. The defined muscles and cloth areas are great for working out light direction if you want to paint that way and the cloaks were interesting to figure out a scheme for.

Best of all the horns (all decadence to the mighty horned God) give obvious lines to paint for the colour gradient, so I don't have to put as much effort in trying to get that bone look right.

Got some more for you, finished Crom on foot, Hedroc and a Death melusine (apologies I can't remember her name, is it The Rose in her Saairen days?):

Also the whole axe drune unit:

And next up is hammer Brugg and his great club brute friends:

I intend to do them two at a time, starting with Nung and Gulguta:

I'll try to remember to take some in-progress pictures of these.

Really nice. The ax drunes are a good coherent unit and the characters look good too. Have a good time painting the brutes.

OK lets see if this works:

Ok that seems to have worked though if there is anything glaringly derpy that I've done wrong then if the less technophobic amongst the group could point it out to me I'd be most appreciative.

That's my first ten points of the year up and done. Next stop - brutes.

Thanks Alex. I think the blood effect on the horn ended up a bit orange but I am pretty pleased with that on the hands yeah. I'll know for next time I suppose.

Hi mates,

enjoyed your pictures! the matte tones of Paul's Zhull are fitting the image I have of these daemons, love the purple on the Drunes, and the stitches on Druc are perfectly loathsome...

My next target were 5 Gesith. They will fight as Wesseax nobles in an encounter against my brothers'Byzantii (I wanted fanatical christians against such ennemies, so I use the Anglecynn muster, removing all non human and sorcerers... quite a challenge, but it's more a narrative campaign)

https://ibb.co/hE3eVc

https://ibb.co/jGVtqc

next step, probably some Toracx, who will join the Mallox (as well as 12 reiver hunters and a tain) for a future 700g skirmish.

so 15/100...

Me again, with 3 toracx:

https://ibb.co/d8knmH

https://ibb.co/gutq6H

https://ibb.co/jgY1Dx

(sorry for the bad quality of the pics, over exposition, low definition... one day I'll learn how to picture minis...)
If I'm calculating right, it's now 27/100.

We'll see if this works, I've never put a photo on this site to get a web address so who knows. Just a tabletop standard: basecoat, wash, highlight, clean lines, nothing fancy as getting back into painting after a 20 years. Been watching videos on using a wet palette and will be trying to do that method in the near future but for now just making a presentable Albainn force in 499. 999, 1499 increments. Here are 4 Oghurithne and 1 Wild Oghuruc = 16/100.

@obwaynekanobi: link ok, oghur(ithne/uc) ok too!

Some Byzantii, 8 legionarii:

So it's 35/100

Finished Gulguta & Nung:

Not entirely sure about these, I was going for pale, purplish mutated-looking skin. I think I may do each set with slightly different shades since as I understand it the flesh-drunes of the Ysians are independent of one another and also wouldn't necessarily stick to a set 'template' for their designs.

Bogbeast without all the twigs and branches because know will just be broken in a matter of time. Been hobbying, also have basecoats on 5 demis and the chimaera. I've got so much good stuff in packing status at moment but in need of a Darklands KS...something about coming home from work to look at concepts and read comments. Challenge: previous 16 + 8 = 24/100. Keep up great work on the podcasts guys!

Keep on posting, I think that's the first Alix I've seen painted. I'm just working on larger minis until feel comfortable attempting a 30mm. I think that's why was drawn to the Albainn and my oghurithne muster because 50mm a little my forgiving for my painting level. Keep posting guys!
