Urbad & his younger, more handsome(?) brother Cionaodh

Postby OrlandotheTech » Sat May 25, 2013 11:59 am

Well I'm in a what I suspect is a both enviable, and common position.... Multiple Urbads.

Now Mierce has said it will be possible to field a unit of Oghurithne in the future, but the sculpt is too characterful and recognisable to drop multiples on the table without it looking a bit 'off'

So what to do ? Convert and modify of cource!

So I started work on putting together Cionaodh, Urbads younger, more handsome brother. Now I'm not really a sculptor so I've got to work with what I've got, but tweek it enough to make a distinct second Oghurithne so this is what I decided to do

First I've removed and repositioned his left foot as I felt Urbad looked to be walking with a bit of a limp, Cionaodh will stride straight and true

Second I've added more of a neck, raising Cionaodh's head off his chest.

Third as a younger brother I felt Cionaodh deserved to keep at least some of his hair, so he's got some long greasy hair on the back of his head

Urbad's snaggle toothed mouth is very recognisable, so I've replaced it with a closed mouth for Cionaodh, and also trimmed his eyebrows to remove Urbad's mono-brow

Finally I've repositioned his right arm and hand slightly, and replaced Urbad's stone axe with what will become either a staff, spear or harpoon (not sure which yet, it may well depend on what I can make look good)

Still to do properly is to remove a lot of the carving from Cionaodh's magic rock (as it's not as 'fancy and powerful as his brothers)

So Urbad the Older brother

and Cionaodh the Younger brother (work in progress)

what do you think?

How about removing the detail on the shoulder pauldron?

I have a second Vortun and gjol on the way so I will have to convert those. I'll have 2 units of 4, including the free extra troll!

That's a good idea,

I'll have to play around and see if I can come up with an alternative that I like before I do it though!

A bit more work on the brothers,

finished cleanup,
replaced Urbad's frying pan with a pot (a bit of a miscast made this necessary, and using a bit of Styrene tube was easier than re-sculpting it)
Decided to go for an iron bound staff for Cionoadh's weapon
finished sculpting Cionoadh's neck
modify shoulder insignia on Cionoadh, simplifying it as befits a younger brother
wash to remove any mould release or finger grease from cleanup
Undercoat in automotive primer
Rough in bases (Cionoadh's didn't work out so I'll need to redo it)

Not much more progress on this pair, I'm waiting for paints for their skin to come in, but I have decided on the basing

For these bunch it's always winter

I may go on to do some very dilute blue/green washes on the base to add a bit more interest to the snow, but I need to do some tests as I've not used this brand before (galeforce 9) and wand to see how it will take paint before potentially spoiling what I've done
