First attempt at a Tarvax

Postby warchild40k » Tue Mar 05, 2013 4:40 am

Here is my first go at a Mierce Miniature. Overall I am pretty pleased with how he came out. I'm not 100% with the skin tone but I'll work that out on my next one. :) He's only on a temporary base at the moment. Once the new plastic ones come out he will find a permanent home. Any constructive feedback is welcome. Thanks!

have you used a wash on him? if not, it might be worthwhile. i've been told letting the wash dry upside down tends to prevent some build up too.

I like the black armour and the axe. You need to make the sharp ground down blade different from the main body of the axe blade. Good work though!

Looks really nice, the black armour in particular. And I like the skin, although it could use a little work. But the contrasting colours work really well together. Looks good. :)

I guess I don't have the "trained eye" of these other fellas. I think it is stunning; I'd like to know what your technique is!

Hey, nice job. I reckon your choice of colours is great!
I would only second that the axe blade needs to be lighter than the body, to differentiate where the blade gets worn, you know hacking through things
And if you can, just a little bit smoother transition on the colour change on the spikes on the shoulders. Break up the lines vertically so to speak.
Really just nit-picking here, beacuse overall, I think this is a great job you've done. :)

Awesome......what colors did you use for the different areas (i.e. armor, skin, etc...)

That's cool, the bit I like the most though is the leather binding on the haft for some reason.

Thanks all! Good catch on the axe blade, I completely missed that :)

As for colors, here is the basic list: (Most of these are Reaper paints)
Skin - Golden Skin w/ sepia wash
Fur - Base - Ruddy Leather
Fur - Highlight - Tanned Skin
Fur - Wash - Devlan Mud
Armor - 1:1 Black and Cloudy Grey
Armor - Edge Highlights - Cloudy Grey
Belts - Uniform Brown
Chainmail - Boltgun Metal
Skulls - Polished Bone
Horns - Aged Bone
Axe - Handle - Honed Steel
Axe - Haft - Mahogany Brown w/ wash of devlan mud
Axe - Head - Boltgun Metal
Axe - Rune area - Dry brush ancient bronze

That's most of it, there were some other washes and pigments (rust) used as well but this is the main list.

LOL, I've painted for a couple of years prior but that was all heavy armor and space marines. Mierce has been my first real foray into non-scifi miniatures. Going from metal to flesh is a pretty big departure and has its own set of challenges.

It is very clean looking which make it all the more impressive. Would love to see more of your work on here when you finish up others.

I haven't done any other Tarvax just yet. Once I finish up my Brythoniaid muster I will be moving on to the Fomoraic Tarvax muster. Hopefully they should start showing up in my WIP thread in a week or so. Stay tuned...
