Warchild40k - WIPs
This is going to be my next project, Uuthüll. So far I've got him cleaned and put pins in the larger parts to help support the weight of the model.
Here are the pieces with pins (sorry it's a little blurry):
Here are a few pictures of him in rough assembly. I just inserted the parts with pins but did not glue anything permanently yet.
As you can see he is quite the beast! It is an amazing model and quickly becominga favorite.
Cleanup wasn't too bad though some of the resin was more a translucent blue/grey. It didn't seem to affect the detail or cleanup any but was odd. Maybe some of the resin didn't mix completely or something, not sure. But once it is primed it won't be noticeable. The anchor was a bit warped but a quick dunk in some hot water and it straightened right out.
Next thing on the list is to fill some gaps where the parts connect and then move to priming and painting. More to come as I progress!

The chain is part of the kit, it attaches on to the anchor and the end is held in one of the hands. That SM is many years old, he was one of my first and is my go to guy for scale purposes

I haven't gone much further really on Uuthüll as I've been side tracked by some other miniatures. One of those is Carrowek. He's about 95% done and I just have a few odds and ends to polish off. Once he's done I'll have to find a good scenic base for him as well. Enjoy!
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Lookin' good! But also get goin' with Uuthüll. It will look amazing with some paint slapped onto it.
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Nice work. Look forward to Uthuul

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
The problem I am having with Uuthuul is figuring out a good color scheme. I was originally thinking a basic black/green dweller of the deep look. But the more I thought about it a lot of deep sea creatures are very light colored or transparent. I've been looking at various images of octopus, squid, etc but haven't really settled on anything yet. I may just end up going with the black/green if I can't figure out a better plan. Meanwhile I'm working on other figures while I mull it over. I think Galagaak while be next up...
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Personally I'd go the classic red route. I think it would look absolutely awesome that way.

Here is a quick WIP of where my Galagaak is at the moment. I've been working mainly on the skin and fur but still some details to pick out. The weapons will be next and I hope to have the rest done in the next couple days.
Gref, i do like the red and it is similar to another picture I have. Still mulling...hmmm

Here is an update. I added on two more arms and did some work on the leather, metal and weapons. Still work to do but he's starting to come together now.

He looks fantastic, but i'm sitting here thinking to myself how would I add a wet sweaty look to that. He looks so calm and dry.. Awesome!!!

He's a WIP JLL so be patient He looks flat because I put a coat of matte on it for some of the weathering but once he's done the skin will look more realistic. I'll also likely be adding some drooling saliva, blood, etc before it is done. Stay tuned!

Just about done, here are the latest updated pics. Just a few more details like additional fur highlights, paint his scars, etc. to finish up but he is mostly complete now.

amazing... five star!
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
It does got a "realistic" gritty feel to it, but I can't help but think that you need something to make it "pop". It's almost a bit too realistic with the different browns.
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
I think some more texture and shading on the metal would improve the look. Maybe more highlights on the skin also.

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
I decided to get back to working on Uuthüll again. Here are some early WIP's. I decided on a dark green color. I may give it a wash to push the green back and make it even darker. I'll decide once it gets closer to completion and see how it looks. Still a lot of work to do but I think he is coming along nicely so far. Mainly I've done the first round of skin, tentacles and suckers. Still have some highlighting to do. The suckers are very pink now but I'm going to highlight in with some lighter pink and white to give it a more fleshy look. It's hard to see in the pictures but the tentacle under color is a very dark purple. I plan to blend it back to a lighter purple as they approach the mouth/beak area. Then on to the leg armor, prow, anchor, whale bone, eyes, etc. More to come...
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
All I can say is, wow. That is an amazing model and you may have just convinced me to buy Uuthüll. How hard was he to assemble? I have limited experience with assembling models and I usually only buy metal. I'm a little worried about getting everything put together.
On another note, Mierce should open a bank because then I could directly deposit my paycheck instead of placing a new order every other day.
Thanks for the pictures!

Awesome! Could be a wamp winner. I'll have to revise my plan to enter a monster now I think!

Looking good! I like the sea-green colour and the pink tentacles contrast nicely.

Looking good. The dark green/pink contrast looks indeed good.

I know this is off topic but when is the deadline for entry into the WAMP contest? I haven't received my mini's from Mierce yet. Thanks guys and I keep checking this thread because I want more pics of Uuthüll. Keep working!

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Quuid, regarding assembly of Uüthull..I actually found it one of the easier models to assemble as all the pieces fit together perfectly without much filling of gaps needed.
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Thanks Andy and Rick. I think I'm going to have to buy Uuthüll. I will regret it if I don't. I really like Warchild's color scheme but I know he is a much better painter than I am!
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Looks really good Warchild.
The Dark Turquoise really suits it. What are the colours you used for his skin?
Did you start of with a base of P3 Coal Black / Vallejo Dark Sea Blue or a different colour?

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
@Azhrarn I started with a Vallejo Panzer Grey Primer then:
Base Coat: Reaper Forest Green
Skin Layer 1: Reaper Forest Green / Reaper Jungle Moss 3:1 ratio
Skin Layer 2: Same colors but a 3:2 ratio
Skin Layer 3: Same colors but a 1:1 ratio
Here is an updated WIP of Uuthüll. I've done work on his thigh greaves, boat prow, anchor and whale jawbone. Still more to come, stay tuned...

It is really coming along! Thanks for giving the paints and ratio for the skin color. I may have to duplicate it.
I really like the contrast with his skin, the armor and the items he is holding. His skin really sticks out.
You are an excellent painter. Thanks for posting more pictures.

Did some more detail work today, spent a lot of time on barnacles...there are so many! The eyes and crossbar on the anchor are the two big things left to do. Hope to finish him up this weekend!

Thanks all for the kind words!
@Quuids it is less about skill and more about just lots of practice, at least for me. There are a lot of videos and forums out there where you can pick up tips and tricks. The biggest thing is to just do it and practice as much as you can. And try not to compare what you do to others too much. Trust me, compared to many painters in this hobby I am just mediocre at best. When you see some of the beautiful blending and freehand work some of the truly talented people in this hobby can pull off it is breathtaking. Definitely check out what other painters can do but look at it for inspiration and not comparison. Only compare your work to stuff you've done previously and you will see steady improvement. Good luck and I look forward to seeing some of your stuff showing up here

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Agree with Warchild, there are very few out there who are good because they have natural talent. Most get good over quite a long period of time. Just keep at it and once you are happy you can do a good job of one technique, try out another until you get good at that too. There are a few online guides and tips sites that will take you through different techniques. I guarantee though that no matter how good you get, you will always think yourself inferior to someone else out there
Karol Rudyk's Slayer Sword winning entry in this years Golden Daemon comp has a banner that makes me want to cut both my hands off and give up this hobby completely. Its is a jaw-dropping piece of freehand in my opinion and I wish I could even paint that well in my dreams

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Yeah, I've been painting for over 25 years and you read an interview and the artist has only been painting for 3 years! Unfortunately some natural talent seems to be required as my 25 years is clearly not enough!

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Alright, with the big guy nearly done I've started working on the base. It was originally going to be a basic rocky or sandy base but as you can see things quickly escalated and before I knew it I was building a Viking ship so I could crush it on the rocks. I couldn't find a model Viking ship that really fit well so I scratch built the front section with balsa wood and wood veneer strips. After a couple hours with a hot glue gun and near endless string of profanity i managed to get it to a point I was happy with. I also sacrificed the handle on an old cheap paint brush for the broken mast and put some rocks on that I had laying around. The plan is to have the base appear as the shallows near a shoreline where Uuthüll has waded ashore after crushing a ship with his big anchor and ripping off it's prow. I still have a lot of various bits of flotsam and jetsam to add along with the water and rocky/sandy bottom. I also may throw in a few Norse casualties once I get them, not sure I could do that to a new mini from MM though. lol I may also have to abandon using the 120mm base as I'm not sure I can achieve the water affect I'm looking for. Guess we'll see where things lead

Good stuff witht he base.
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
That is extremely impressive, how did you build that bought from scratch? It fits perfectly in that spot. This is all so interesting, great work!

@Quuids The boat was built out of balsa wood and some wood strips.
Here are some updated WIPs of the base, still more work to do but it is coming along.

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
It seems to me as Uuthüll has some suckers on his toes. Wouldn´t those produce some funny sounds when he moves along rocks/hardground?...plop, plop, plop...
BTW: Stunning and inspiring work on model and base!!!

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
That looks excellent. I may go to hobby lobby and by some supplies to replicate the base. I really love the wreckage. Thanks for the brilliant ideas
Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
Are you putting the base in "water effect"?

Re: Warchild40k - WIPs
The part under the boat will have some water effect before everything is done. The rocky part will be like the shore line with rubble strewn about and the boat sort of half in the water and half on shore.
