Painted Armies

Postby Rob Lane » Fri Aug 09, 2019 7:09 pm

Everyone,

At some point over the next few months I am getting the second edition Darklands / Savage Hordes books ready for publication.

One of the cool things I'd like to do is get hosts that are already out there and painted nicely by you lot into the book, featuring the person that painted / uses that host (which will be professionally photographed of course) and allowing them a few words as well.

I spoke briefly about this to a couple of people at Coffa Tree but I'd like to formally extend my invitation here.

Now, ideally I'd like one person/host for each kindred, so here's who I'd like to feature.

Here's an important point: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR PAINTING SKILL IS! I want to feature real people with real armies who have painted them themselves. Having said that, if you express interest and it is two coats of grey and a crap drybrush, you're not going to make the cut. Bear that in mind!

Albainn - Dirk Hasse (confirmed)
Anglecynn - Keith Laws (confirmed)
Atalantes - James Polmear (confirmed)
Brythoniaid - Jon Chester (confirmed)
Byzantii - Dayle Archer (confirmed)
Érainn - Scott Atkinson (confirmed)
Fomoraic - Hugh Badham (confirmed)
Infernii - Scott Heystraten (confirmed)
Jutes - Christian Hacon [aka Bish] (confirmed)
Khthones - Rob Lane (confirmed)
Norse - Tim Fisher (confirmed)
Vras - Paul Bannon (confirmed)
Ysians - Andy Parkinson (confirmed)
Sell-Swords -

If you're listed here, please take the time to confirm your interest or not.

If you're not listed here, and you have a host that fits the bill, and you're halfway through it or intend to be halfway through it, then please let me know if you're interested. Ideally you need to have painted armies before and finished them; if you think you can't make it, then don't say - let someone else fit the bill.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVED!

Host pointers:
1 - We do need to have a viable 1,500 silver host, no more no less, so if you've painted more you have a choice to make as to what to feature; if you haven't and want to be featured, get painting!
2 - Small conversions are allowed, but you can only use Darklands components to make that conversion
3 - Miniatures from other companies are definitely not allowed
4 - Each miniature needs to be based on Darklands bases and nothing else; ridiculous basing on inches-high rocks will ensure a rejection and possibly a slap for committing a Base Crime
5 - If you live overseas and fancy joining in, that's fine, but you'll have to come over here for the photography

Now, we can photograph your army and yourself no later than March 2021, so you've time to finish it if you wish; definitely no later than that. If it can be done earlier that's fine, but ideally I want the photographer to do it in early 2020 as there's no need until then.

Cheers
Rob

Nice one Jon.

Something I forgot to add:

I'll need a few words from you as to why you love Darklands, why you chose your kindred and why you chose your colour scheme, plus anything else you might want to throw in there!

Not now, when the time comes.

Happy to put my hand up for the Albainn, although being in the colonies (Australia specifically) physically getting to other side of the world for a photo shoot may be problematic.
(Rob, i believe you may have discussed this with my fellow aussie, Scott, already.)

Milord, umm, well you see ever since they closed down the resin mines i haven't had much work and times have been tough.
So, i would be ever so grateful if i could paint some of them infernii up right nice for you.
I will work ever so hard and make sure they look good enough for your magic picture box.

Scott / Ranaglan - forgive me, I've not replied to your requests: I do not mind at all, but the photography of your armies will be an issue.

Basically, if you can't make it over here you need to find a photographer willing to take a photo of you behind a tabletop with your army on it. Preferably with a totally blank background so I can photoshop you into a pub with a cast iron radiator behind it ;o)

If you're happy with that, I'll be happy to add you in...

The photography will be the easy part. Finishing off so many miniatures (to a level i'm happy with) is the bigger challenge.

(I'll also answer to Hey You, Pirate Guy, Viking Dude, Baldy, and Daaaaaaaad.)

Hi Rob, I've just stumbled across this thread.
Thank you for the invite.
I'll happily submit my Jutes but there's one snag, they're all on clear acrylic bases.
I doubt I'll have the time to rebase in time due to Salute commitments.
Also I have an Albainn army as a back up if required but also on clear bases.
Sorry to be a pain.

photography requirements.

Postby Ranaglan » Mon Feb 03, 2020 10:27 am

Ok, so as per Rob's whatsapp instruction, what follows below is my list of questions related to the photography.
Most of the queries are predominantly for myself and Scott (Ministry_of_fear) because physically being on the same landmass as the rest of you is likely to be hurdle.

Let me preface by saying i managed to run a small photography business in mediocre fashion (it was essentially a hobby that paid for itself & little more) so some of these may seem a little pedantic or technical.

In what i hope is some sort of semi-organized order, the questions:

What is your latest date you need to receive photos/files by?
(I'd like to have them to you at least one, preferably two, weeks prior to allow time for re-shoots if need be.)

What lighting conditions? Sunlight, fluorescent lighting, cool white, warm white, etc.
(I know you've said white background for photoshopping purposes, but actual lighting can affect how well that'll work.)

What format do you, your publisher, and your photographer need the photos in?
(I would suggest JPG or PNG for the publisher and RAW for the photographer. Depends on who's handling final image processing/manipulation really.)

Do you have a specific list of shots you have in mind?
(wide shot of full muster, close shot of characters, close-ish shot of units, top down, battlescape/scene, etc.)

Any particular layouts of minis? (General's front and centre, big guys at the back or fore?)

Any terrain or props?
(something thematic like standing stones, hills, trees, etc? Paints & brushes, a hobby space setup? Hills/platforms for rear ranks of large units?)

Any clothing suggestions or requirements for ourselves?
(My understanding is that you're considering have the painters/hobbyist in some shots despite how unphotogenic I am.)

Any written information?
(Muster list & costs? Backstory for said muster? Bio/backstory for the painters?)

Any other additional things we should know, or that you may require that i haven't thought of?

There's a reasonable chance i'll think of more questions yet. Or at least ask for further clarifications. Some of it is just for my peace-of-mind, but plenty of it will be needed for our photographer too.
As you've said March is your date i'm assuming the 1st thereof to be safe, and trying to ensure it goes smoothly for you from our end (i've been a project manager before too).

Cheers.

To be honest, I'm not sure right now, because I doubt the rules will be ready for Salute now. There's just too much not right and I've too much work to do before Salute. I would say, for now, mid-August.

Cool white. Hate yellow white!

TIF. Never JPG, you lose too much.

Not worried about muster list and costs, but a backstory is cool and a bio is too!

Not right now...

I'll be honest, you're probably a little more on the ball than I am - I was planning to do an update soon to tell everybody where I am at, but I am utterly snowed under right now and there's no chance I'll get the rules done for Salute. It's just impossible with all the other things I have to do...

Shame to hear that not all is going to plan (although it does give me some more time to polish my painting and get the last few pieces to a better standard).
I can be more on the ball, because there's a pretty good chance i have less to focus on (in fact, this painting project has been my only hobby for the last 6 months).

I need to grow my hair and buy a muscle shirt.
Other than that I'm good to go.
The delay is good for me as it means we could maybe get some pics of the extra long Salute table in there.

In the meantime, feel free to release some more Albainn in the coming months (Amune Boa, hint hint) and i'll happily rework my list to include them.

A quick update on this; once the rule book is out of the way I'll be concentrating on Savage Hordes, so watch for an update on when I'll need everything.

At this point though, all I will need from you all is to reaffirm your commitment to your armies please...

Cheers
