Postby darthmarsh » Wed Aug 07, 2013 11:03 pm

Hi Guys

I thought I'd post some links here to a few WIP's I've got as Mierce miniatures is 100% responsible for me becoming more than just a mini hobbyist lurker!

I have to apologize in advance but I've tried to work out how to post pictures but I've been down the pub all evening and cant get my head around it. links will have to do :D

http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/sho ... im-s-WIP-s

Ley me know what you think and any suggestions on how I can improve would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

It's a bit crazy Tim! The blue looks great though. It may be better without the green but seeing your reference I understand what you've done. I see you have fallen prey to mold line terror, sometimes the camera pics them up better than the eye! Metal looks great also.

As for uploading you need to put you pics online (photobucket) and copy the link from there. I did not understand at first but it really is easy when you know how!

It's a great paintjob. Maybe a wash of purple could tie the two colours together in another way, too.

Another Tim!

That's an excellent first mini! Pees all over my early efforts.

The paint scheme may be a little gaudy, but then seeing your reference it makes sense - although I see the Dyndraig as being less tropical in nature/colouration as they hail from not-so-sunny Wales but as always you paint your minis in the way that suits you not the fluff. Who knows what colour dragon men 'should' be? ;) Not I!

I see you've been picked up on the mould lines - it's always the case when you're learning - I use the flat edge of a sharp hobby knife to remove those - just scrape away and be careful not to carve into the miniature itself and remove detail. Also, very fine wet and dry sandpaper is great for this!

An encouraging start!

Here be dragons!

Hi Guys

Thanks for the feedback

@Andy and Tim. Colour wise I like the idea of them using their bodies as a threat display 'Look at me. I may not be poisonous but I am going to ruin your day if you mess with me' :)

I'd like to think that I've learnt my lesson with regards to prepping the model and paying attention to the mould lines. Fortunately its not that noticeable to the naked eye (although its all I can see now)

@Grefven I'm going to try to smooth out the greens and blues first using some of the advice I've been given on the other site. Then I'll attempt a few glazes to hopefully tie the colours in and accentuate the shadows. If I can accumplish it remains to be seen!

I've posted a few more picks of the big fella. It looks like I'm not the only one who will be converting the Cawrdraig!

Cheers

I like the idea you have, but iguana's are not dragons! once you remove the mould lines and use some glazes to smooth your transactions you should have a nice little dragon there. As for the conversion, It's a lovely idea, that I think Rob or Tim mentioned on the kickstarter page, but it's a bit of a waste for such awesome sculpts. Unless you just ordered the individual parts, in which case great job

Thanks for commenting EVL. This is still very much a WIP at the moment and I do indeed plan on glazing, blending and punching up the contrast (whether I can actually do it is another matter!)

As was mentioned by AndyP in Razormage's WIP, Aradae Mawr's head sculpt (and I think the whole humanoid toros) really isn't up to the same quality as the dragon body section. I had already bought and started Galhwch and was comparing the two and it looked like the waists of both were approximately the same size. I decided to combine the two as I believe it will result in a better quality mini. I tried to order the individual bits but it was actually slightly more expensive than buying the complete kit. It was really never my intention to convert the big fella. It came from my belief (after seing the kit in person) that it will end in a better final result

So I've had a little time tonight to get some painting in. I've tried to thin down the paints and I've made use of the wet palette (which I love using) I'm pretty confident that the blends are a little better as a result. I've reworked the horns and metal armor trying to get a smoother colour transition. I've added purple to the shadow areas (thanks Grefven) and I quite like the added depth it gives the deep recesses.

I've started the axe and I have mixed feelings about it as it stands. Its on the side furthest away from my imagined light source and so my first idea was for it to be quite dark, with intense highlights. My second thought was that it's a huge area of importance for the mini so to give it a little more attention (this is what I went for) I'm far from happy with it as the moment. Anyone have any ideas on where I go from here?

Other than that I've started a few bits of detailing, Skulls, buckskin, and leather (I'm quite happy with the shoulder strap)

Sorry for the crappy photo's!

Any feedback is more than welcome

Cheers

The last couple of days I've been thinking about how to display this bad-boy.
I've been debating as to whether I keep it simple or go large! I decided as I was already completely out of my comfort zone that I may as well keep on pushing myself. With this in mind I've planned out a wee diorama. I kind of picture this guy as a engineered guardian of a long dead civilization. I know I wanted to include a few elements in the base - ruins, waterfall (which he will be straddling) a cliff and jungle foliage. I had no idea how to achieve this until I took my son for a walk through the park the other day and found some bark laying on the floor. It reminded me of some work I'd seen on Coolminiornot by honorguard (http://www.coolminiornot.com/324482?browseid=6458227) that used bark as rock formations. having stuffed the nappy bag with as much discarded bark as I could fit in there I went home and ordered some other bits for the base. Elf ruins from Scribor and some jungle plants from Fredericus Rex. Very early days at the moment but this is what I have so far-

What I have planned (minus the elven ruins)

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

You really aim high. :D Just remember, that when you start out and aren't as experienced as, for example "Honorguard", don't let it get to you in case you aren't satisfied with the end-result. And don't spend too much time trying to fix it in case you aren't happy with the result, but learn from it and move on to the next project and take with you the things that you liked about it. What I can say about it right now is that if you pull it off, it'll be awesome. :D

Hi Grefven

Very wise words. I don't think I'll ever be 100% happy with anything I do but I'm realistic enough to know where my limits are and to push them but not to go overboard.

I'm taking a little time out from Galhwch at the moment as I got some conflicting feedback about his base (link above to coolminiornot)

So I thought i'd do a little work on the big guy

I'm approaching this dude with a slightly different pallet and style. I'm trying to emulate Mr William O'Connor, creator of the excellent Dracopiedia. This image specifically

Image

I just love how gnarled and ancient the dragon looks. This is still a very early WIP (more of a proof of concept than anything else)

Image

Again any feedback is more than welcome

I was thinking about the base last night and I think I might have a plan. The base has a largish void just behind the waterfall. My idea is to carve out a little grotto, add some stalactites/ stalagmites, water effect pools and 3 little dwarven miners from Scribor, one of whom has a torch so it gives me the opportunity to try some OSL!

Image

I've also done a little more to Galhwch and if i'm honest (apart from the rock he's standing on) I think I'm pretty much done. I'm really worried I'll end up over doing him and I'm pretty happy with where he's at right now.
any thoughts?

Here's also another angle of the base and my first attempt at some jungle foliage. The plant has been coated in GW ardcoat to hopefully give it that waxy appearance tropical plants have (it's a bugger to photograph though)

Uhm. I don't know how I missed it earlier, but is that a nasty mold-line that is running down the side of the horn? If it is, then I suggest that you clean it up and repaint that horn. It might not look like a really big deal, but in the end, you'll regret not removing it, as little things like that can destroy an entire paintjob. Regarding the paintjob, if you want to polish it up a tad I suggest that you work on its right hand as it looks a bit rough. Also maybe the red part at the end of the axe could maybe use some more highlighting (maybe with a little, little bit red/orange mix at the very high edges). You generally want to push highlights to almost the extreme. It might not look "realistic", but it usually looks better taking highlights much higher than normally expected as "realistic".

Grefven I know your right about the mold-line but i'm terrified that if I strip the horn I won't be able to redo it to the same standard! point taken about the red axe hair stuff, I'll give that another bout of highlights. I've been looking at the right hand and your right again, I'll give that a going over as well (not a lot of details in that area to paint surprisingly) I'm also in two minds about the axe blade. I personally think its the least successful part of the mini (although I do like the rust) what I'm debating at the moment is repainting it bronze, like the handle. I really like how that turned out and I think it may look quite striking on the blade as well

What you should do with the right hand is to use a few coats of glazes. That will make the transition between the colours a lot smoother, and will create a very nice blend. If you aren't really knowing how to glaze, it's pretty simple in its technique, but quite hard to master. What you want to do is to push highlights and shading to a high point, then you take a very, very thinned paint (or ink) and go over the area with that paint/glaze with many thin, thin, thin layers. Doing it right, the layers should be so thin that they almost dry in a couple of seconds. This means that you will have to go over the area many, many times for the glaze to smooth out the highlights/shading and create a very nice blending. Although the hand is very small, I think you can pull off a nice colour transition using glazing. Search the web for it, there are lots of tutorials and lots of good youtube vids on it. In my opionion, glazing is probably one of the "best" techniques you can use to get a really awesome look on a miniature.

Thanks Grefven thats really good advice a'll have a look at a few tutorias then give the gaze's a go

Well i've not got that much done over the course of the last week on the big fella but I have managed a small amount of progress on the base. The cavern will have 1 dwarf with flaming torch and 1 miner with pickaxe. The main components are there now I just need to add and paint rubble, water effect, bio-luminescent plants (for secondary light source) dwarves and the subterranean elven ruins!

Having a go at the OSL on one of the statues. No idea what i'm doing! thoughts?

The OSL is still very much a work in progress at the mo. I will be going over the whole thing with a number of glazes, washes, refining the blends and adding extra highlights. I also have to change the focus of the OSL on the statue as, after building a slight walkway in the cavern, my dwarf is now slightly higher than I thought he was go to be.....rats!

Wee update on the base as well. The dwarfs are here and primed. I've put them in situ to get an idea of where the light will fall (hence the change in torch focal point) I'm pretty happy with the overall effect so far.

I've also added the fine gravel and worked on the base of the waterfall

Any feedback welcome

If something gets too tall for what you've planned, you can always just chop them in half and put them into a water-effect, playing with the thought that they are wading through waist-deep water. :D

Hi Folks it's been awhile (has it really been a over a year?)

Sadly work, toddler and a huge drop in motivation means I haven't held a paint brush since my last up date....until recently that is! I've shelved the dio for the time being as I feel I may have bitten off more than I could chew with that one (I will come back to it in due course though) Instead I've been putting some colour on another Mierce sculpt that's been sitting in the cupboard mocking me. I'm only about 2 hours in at the moment but I'm starting to like where it's going. Obviously it needs far more work but I'd love to hear your thoughts

Cheers

Ok only a little more work on the skin last night and i'm a little torn. Originally I was basing my skin tone from the Darkness (Legend) loved the film as a kid and that version has always screamed big stompy, badass demon to me, however I think in reality it's a little too red and flat. I was really liking the the more subtle dark red with the purple and I think I will add a few glazes to tone it back down. I'm also thinking of introducing a second colour to the face. Maybe some warm dark grey or warm light purple. Just to bring the focus back to the head and add some more interest. thoughts?

the colour scheme must have subliminally imprinted itself on my brain! OH well, it does looks fantastic and Seb is probably one of my favorite painters. Mine won't be a carbon copy of Seb's (and it goes without saying nowhere near the same standard) but I guess it's good to have quality reference material, right?

Morning all

it's pretty late here in blighty but I've been bitten by the painting bug and it will not be denied! Tonight I've given Malacant's a break while I debate when to go with his skin shade.

Instead I've been working on a little friend that i'm planing to a base with him. The Warmaster Horus.

A couple of firsts for me really. This is my first human head and first go at human flesh. I had no idea how to approach it and was more than a little intimidated by the level of detail. I also know that in order to sell the whole figure I need to get the head right. Then i was totally inspired while browsing through Tommy's (from coolminiornot's) thread and Facebook page (which I highly recommend by the way https://www.facebook.com/GolemPainti...=photos_stream) on it I found a excellent photographic tutorial on the very same head sculpt! I don't have the same paints as Tommy so I've made do with some Vallejo model colour that I've mixed up but I've got to say I'm very happy with the results.

The only thing that lets it down in my eyes is the tiny bit of bobbling and the slightly deformed right ear both of which are far beyond my ability to fix. Instead I've managed to convince myself that the Warmaster has a few moles and a cauliflower ear (well you would be a little beaten up if you where the head of a billion strong army of murderous, devil worshiping nutjobs) I've still a little more detailing to do and I'm toying with the idea of a red OSL which will originate from the amours collar but otherwise I think it's done.

Sorry for the non Mierce related post I hope it doesn't break any rules!

As always crits are more than welcome

Cheers

I started Horus's armour last night and I found getting smooth blends over the large flat surfaces a complete bugger! i'll see if I can get some photo's later as I could really do with some advise.

Also did a little more detailing to Malacant's face and skin. Just trying to push the contrast and make it pop

Again any crits more than welcome.

Thanks Andy

Couple of updates

I've worked a little more on Horus. Still a very long way to go but i'm happier than I was with the armour. I think putting his head on helped a lot (it's not clued yet) It gave me a better idea of how the figure is coming along as a whole and stopped me from staring at green for hours on end (I was starting to feel like Johnny Nice Painter!)

Image
Image
Image

I'm find having more than one mini on the go really helps keep me motivated. If I hit a wall on one, I put it aside and work on the other for a while. I switched back to Malacant today and decided to have a go at painting the leather straps, chains and some TMM on the shoulder. After painting and repainting the bloody thing about 4 times I've got the metal to a point where i'm starting to like it. I used Vallejo steel as a base then painted multiple coloured glazes over the top to give it some colour variation. I then shaded down using blue them some very thin null oil washes to dirty it up. Like I say i'm pretty happy with the effect. I just need to tidy it up a little and then replicate it across the rest of him.

Here's where I am so far. I kind of feel that I've gone as far as I can with him to be honest. I'm worried that anything else I do will end up just getting too fussy. Any ideas or thoughts guys?

I've saved the best till last as now it's back to Malacant. Horus has built my confidence and I'm really looking forward to painting him now.

Tonight's work. While It's always been my intention to base Horus with Malacant, I thought I'd give the stock base a lick of paint. Just to experiment with painting marble and I'm actually pretty happy with the results. Not sure how to paint the eagles head however? I don't want to do the whole thing in marble as I want a little variation and contrast but now i'm struggling to come up with something that would be appropriate for an Imperial palace. Any ideas?

HI,

You have a big bunch of work ahead!!!

Well, my favourites WIP here are Malacant, HOrus, a the dwarf diorama...

Are you going to add diferent tones on Malacant's skin? I think it would look great on him.

On Horus, one tip for the next time you paint marble. You painted the floor like it was just one tile. The color grains on the tiles are very neat and with continuity. For a much more real aspect, I think is much beter if you paint every tile separately, respecting the direction of the color grains but not making connect all of them. I'm not quite sure if I have explained mysefl well.

What about paint the eagles in bronze with some oxidation?

Many thanks,
Mariano

Malacant does already have some purples and blue running through the shadows, red and orange for mid tones and I will add a little more orange for the highlight (it's not very promanant in the photos as there a little rubbish) The body wont have quiet the same colour palette as the head as the skin of the face is pulled very tight over the bone. In my head this would change the amount of blood there and lead to more bleached colours. Also I want the face to be a real focal point, hence the difference.

With the marble on Horus I did actually realise what I'd done after the first step and tried to correct it for the rest of the stairscase (which was lazy of me as I should have redone that area) As I say, I was really only experimenting with the marble and it came out far better than I'd hoped it would. That's why I was hesitant to redo it.

I would have loved to do it bronze but unfortunately it's sculpted as rock. With that in mind I decided to try a stippling technique one of the guys on Coolminiornot used very successfully on a dwarf dragon slayer mini. While my attempt is nowhere as good I think the contrast works well.

Now all I've got to do is tidy up a few bits. Ppaint the odd skull, pauldron and steel reinforcement and I'm done. The only other thing is I'd like to try is dirtying up the base a little more. I'm thinking of using some weathering pigment. I've never used them so don't no what would work well. Any ideas?

Hi,

I think marble and granite works well together to create contrast on the base. But you can work a little bit more on the marble's shadows and on the granite's light.

Weathering pigment are gonna work perfect on your base. I don't have much experience with them but you have many tutorials on the web. To adhere the pigment to the surface of the miniature you can use Matte Medium but I don't use it on miniatures of exhibition.

Keep on painting, looks better day by day.

Ciao!

Great painting development. For having painted your first miniature about a year ago, it's been a very great incline in your skill. :D

Thanks Grefven. I've learnt so much on Malacant and Horus and I'm sort of tempted to revisit Galhwch!

Thanks Mariano. I've tried to work a little more on the contrast into both the marble and granite. In the end i think I was in danger of overdoing it and ruining it.

I think Horus is finally finished (apart from a plinth) The pigments have been played with and added and while I think they may be a little to red, I'm still happy with how they turned out. I've left the skulls and steel supports slightly less detailed as I want to keep the viewers eye focused on the man himself.

What do you guys think? Anything that I should maybe change or take another look at? On that note i'd like to thank everybody that commented on this WIP. I'm 100% certain that without your help I wouldn't be anywhere near as satisfied as I am with him (that's if I finished him at all)

Cheers

Tim

Thanks Mariano

Progress has been very slow of late. Work is just getting in the way of any meaningful painting. I've currently got both Malacant and the forgeworld Avatar simmering in the background and Vulkan has just arrived. So as soon as I get a chance I'll hopefully sit down and get a few hours in.

Crikey, something was achieved!

I got a little bit of painting time in last night so I thought I'd work on the big fella. Preparing the metal and worked a little on the shield and belt. I'm trying to go for a lacquer look for the belt so the black and red will be gloss varnished when finished. For the shield I decided to carry on the colour theme although this time I want it to look like dyed leather. Still lots to do on both sections to blend them further and tidy up the TMM but at least it's progress

I like the shield, but maybe a little too bright for the general setting? Maybe a dark wash to tone it down a bit would look good? The bright wooden colour makes it look new, while the torn "leather" makes it look old and worn. Just a suggestion.
