AndyP Mjagnir wip
AndyP Mjagnir wip
Not much to show yet but finally got some paint on Mjagnir. Primed in black Vallejo polyurethane primer through the airbrush, then pre-highlighted with white Vallejo polyurethane using zenithal lighting technique.
First colour to go on is the flesh. Base coated with airbrush using Reaper bronzed skin.

3 hours spent on the face and I'm still not happy with how it looks. Help please!!

Looks good to me - the flesh bleeding into the beard makes it look funny, but when I look through my fingers so I can just see the face, it looks awesome

Re: AndyP Mjagnir wip
I think you're going in the right direction.
You've already got some warm red's blended into the lips but I think he would benefit from some more colour throughout the rest of the face. Some purple/ red's in the eye recesses. maybe a little blue at the temples?
I'm crap at explaining what I mean but there is a wonderful set of photo's on this Facabook page https://www.facebook.com/GolemPaintingStudio?fref=ts Just scroll through the photo's until you get to Horus (it's what I bases my Horus's face on)
Keep pluging mate. It's a great start

I agree with Darth, you need more variation in tones. Plus more contrast. Lighten the highlights, darken the recesses. Umm, take a look at mine? Plus Bohun's and of course, Ben Comets studio version. Ben's is the one I used for reference.

Have smoothed the blends a bit more and blocked in the colours around the face to frame it and focus my attention better. Will add some red to the mixes to improve the overall tone and probably a darkish blue into the shadows.

Thanks all for the tips. I have been looking at AndyS' & Bens' versions too for guidance

Re: AndyP Mjagnir wip
Don't be afraid to go too far with the highlights Andy. You can always glaze them back down after. The face was very frustrating. Trying not to make it too cartoonish was a problem for me.

Also, if you're not sure about it, move on and paint the rest. See how it fits with the rest of the piece.

Re: AndyP Mjagnir wip
To be honest I did go very light with the highlights, then thought he looked too washed out so darkened them back down a bit. It was the massive forehead that did it

Yep, I did the same!
Currently watching base alchemy disc 2. I'm looking forward to seeing your Mjagnir base once you've watched yours!

I already have an idea for his base. If I can pull it off. Want to make a generic gaming base for use in gaming (obviously) but have it so that I can take him off it and put him on a separate display piece like a diorama of a stand off with him and a unit of Duguth. I have a massive piece of cork bark with his name on

Yah. No idea how long it will take me. I've had Mjagnir for a year now and am only at this point

I'm not 100% yet whether to use a unit of Duguth or a mounted Penda.

Duguth sounds cool to emphasise how huge he is

The reworked face looks great Andy. I think you're right and can push the colour a little more and as Andy said, up the highlights.
With regards to the base. I personally think it depends on what atmosphere you want too convey and which will keep you the most motivated. The unit could look great. It will really show off just how big Mjagnir is and maybe portray an atmosphere of 'courage in the face of certain death' which would be cool BUT will mean lots of little standard models, lots of painting and may result in you loosing your impetus and ultimately either rushing the painting, or worse still, seeing the project stall.
Mounted Penda on the other hand is only one character miniature and will be far faster and more interesting to paint. He also has the perfect pose. It's classic hero vs impossible odds. He's seen and appraised his foe and he's charging straight into battle nonetheless. Not because it's suicide but because he know's something we don't. He's confident he will win!
just my two cent. looking at what you've done so far it will look cool whatever you do

That is exactly my thinking Darthmarsh. Penda on horse is my preferrance for now, but we'll see what happens.
