Gwaelod tactics

Gwaelod suffers from the low authority of the Prifdyndraig, low skill of Dyndraig, and that all units are “wild” or “feral”.

The low authority of the Prifdyndraig means that the army will often not have the initiative against human-led forces. This also means that issuing new orders may be less effective due to low authority and lack of heralds.

Low skill means that Gwaelod units will typically be striking after their opponents in melee and not benefit from fated strikes.

Wild and feral units have unpredictable reactions to losing combat, and can injure themselves as a result.

These drawbacks are offset by pervasive combat shot spray weapons, roar, ubiquitous fearsome/terrifying, and toughness.

Combat shot spray weapons with fire allow the Gwaelod units to greatly increase the number of attack dice rolled against small based models. These attacks are easy shots, allowing fated damage regardless of skill. Combined, this can greatly increase the chances of continuous fire damage. Invocations like The Fire Within raise the lethality of this attack by increasing the number of dice per attack. Finally, Stand and Spray reactions can also serve as a deterrent to charging units. Don't forget that fire effect tokens are based on the mass of the model inflicting it, so dyndraig cause 4 per fated hit.

Roar is an effortless action that can be embedded with other engagement actions (such as attack) or movement actions. Roar has two effects. First, it raises the heart of friendly units. For Resolute units, their heart will go to Exulted, which grants a -1 to Attack Strikes. Panicd units become resolute. The high Might of Gwaelod units should mean that most units are Exulted most of the time. The second effect is to force Dread tests (Fortitude test) on enemy units. While this might only have a 25% chance of the enemy failing, a Roar can affect any enemy unit with half of the Roarer’s Might, meaning much of the battlefield. Failing enemy units drop a level of heart (exulted to resolute to shaken to panic reaction). In short, Roar with every action.

Being Fearsome or Terrifying causes engagers to take Valor tests (Fortitude). While there are many modifiers to make this somewhat easy to pass (banner, champion), there’s always a chance of failing. And when they do fail, don’t forget to Roar and force them to make a Panic Reaction.

Most Gwaelod units benefit from tough and high Constitution, keeping them fighting longer.
