A long time since I've managed to finish one of the Darklands minis despite starting several, but the new Waelwulfs have inspired me to pull my finger out

Looks really good. I like the bases and the fur. However the horns could be shaded a little (add a little browns near the body) - now they look pale white.

There is a fair amount of brown in the tusks (and body spikes) near the body, even though the photos aren't great at showing it

(but it was a good suggestion if I hadn't done it)

My Oak/Tree Beast (probably the equivalent of Culaitar) painted up, based off the fen beast unit concept art and scaled up it's the first thing I've done totally from scratch

Edit: new better photos

Thacaldān the mound beetle

The iridescence is provided by Daler Rowney FW Pearlescent liquid acrylic (genesis green), shaded with a gw thrakka green wash and then re-highlighted with then genesis green, I'm really happy with the final result

I´ve said it once in the comments when you´ve first shown this bug - stunning effect on the caprace, those pictures show the glimmering/shimmering/glossy effect even better than your first and the muted green on the body goes very well with the brightly colored shell - it looks very organic and realistic, awesome paintjob!

One thing that I think I would have done different are the claws, maybe they would stick out better if they were painted bone colored and different than the shell - but thats just a minor point.

Incredible paintjob and thank you very much for the tip with those inks!

thanks, I think you're right about the claws working less well than the rest of the bug.

I actually tried them in the same dark green as the jaws (really didn't work well) before I went with the shell colour, but it's going to be an interesting question to explore if I do another one

The bit i'm most pleased with is the darker green spikes on the thorax, I think they lift the whole thing and make the rest of the shell look even more shiney in contrast

(and the skull pile by the back leg is painted, honest, it's just not photographing well  )

(magágg body, cormorágg arms and horns and added body hair since he's a grown up monster that isn't going to be shaving his armpits and groin before going out for a hard days pig throwing!)

Great work as always Orlando - Beire is right, the skin looks great (especially on his face, well done!).

I also like the ropes a lot, they look very realistic, sturdy and strong enough to hold that massive stone, that looks stunning too by the way. The Horns turned out very nice too, and the base is as verdant and idyllic as always.

But you don´t want me to believe that he is going to throw that pig? Somehow it seems to be the one in command ;D.

Back to the Bug for a short Moment: I´ve noticed the horns on his back, but somehow I forgot to mention them in my comment, I liked that part of him a lot. They break the bright shell and make it look even brighter in comparison while giving the eye a place to rest on (Maybe Magmorágg´s eye?)

Keep up your great work!

The rope is actually super easy, white undercoat covered with Vallejo model air Wood (70.077) brush painted on. As it's so thin it almost acts like a wash and shades itself (especially on such large rope twists). I then do a tiny bit of highlighting with wood and a 'normal' white (pp/gw etc) and bingo really good looking rope.

I've tried it on 28mm stuff (height wise) too and it works almost as well although you do need a bit of actual shading as well as you want a bit more contrast at that size)

this is what you get when a demon tainted dead byzantii of jute blood comes up against a corpse-waker, a very tormented Dreaguth with a demon trying to pull it back to Dis. This, of course, hurts a lot and makes the Dreaguth ever angrier than normal as it's soul is being torn between the two calls

Great Paintjob! I like the red Detail on his torn Tunica, shows his History very well. His Ghostly Robe looks great, very nice transitions and as always a incredible base (I like the detail that the gras that he would have been standing on/hovering over) died and withered away, nice touch!

The Scabard doesn´t look quite as big as it seemed on the unpainted Miniature, now it looks fitting (or did you change it before you´ve painted him?).

If I had to point out one thing that I don´t like as well as the other parts of the Miniature it would be the skin - please don´t get me wrong, the skin looks incredible (especially his face), I would be glad if I was able to produce such a nice skintone. It´s just that it looks too alive to me, I liked the blue-grey that you´ve used on anes-Spurius a little bit better, but as I said, only a minor point and I guess a matter of preferences.

Awesome Conversion and great paintjob - keep them coming Orlando!

Postby OrlandotheTech » Sat Aug 13, 2016 12:00 pm

Glad you spotted my dead grass touch, all the spooky ghosts will have this

my basing is actually really simple,

first build up the base with milliput (or any other cheap putty or filler) and use the mini to mark where it will sit (deeper footprints if the figure is big and heavy or the ground is wet and soggy), and add any other rocks, tree trunks etc

second after the base has dried/set check the figure still fits where you want it to as stuff can shrink or move and you really don't want to get to the end and find the mini doesn't sit right

paint the base (except where the mini sits), it only has to be rough but you want green under where the grass will be and browns under dirt etc that way if your scatter doesn't 100% cover or if you loose bits while gaming you're not seeing through to unpainted putty

my dirt on these is armypainter brown battleground with a bit of overpainting/washing (although it basically doesn't need it)
Image

next some grass or flower tufts (don't be afraid to cut or pull these apart to make them smaller or less round) I've used army painter tufts, but my current go to is warpainter http://stores.ebay.co.uk/War-painter, but there are plenty of suppliers out there. You may also want to trim the tuft edges to make them more upright and less domed

and finally shorter static grass (so for 4mm tufts use 2mm grass), and you want one with a mix of fibre colours in as a solid colour just doesn't look great (this one is an 'autumn' mix from a random ebay seller, and has at least 2 different greens, 2 yellows and a red in it)

rather than fixing stuff down with pva as many do I use cheap poundshop superglue, apply a layer of glue so it looks wet, pour over dirt or grass, wait a few seconds and tap off the exess. It's a lot faster, and I find it means the grass stands up more naturally than with pva

then do any washing, drybushing etc and then glue/pin the mini onto the unpainted 'footprint' left for it and wash/paint any visible putty to finish

the slate I use on a lot of my bases is out of my front garden but any decent garden center will have it (or for about the same price much smaller bags can be found on ebay and similar)

the scabbard on this one is version 2.0 a touch narrower, and with more 'point' to it (it actually wouldn't fit the sword, but it looks a lot better)

I take your point about the skin, but i'm actually thinking of redoing the first as once the robes are shaded I think it just looks too similar, but very much not sure on that, I may end up running with both.... the longer ago they died the less 'alive' the skin looks?

and the best bit I think is the shield that doesn't actually get seen unless you pick up the mini

Great Work Orlando!

I have to say that I prefer the skintone of this one, but your Idea of mixing different skintones to show different stages of Decay sounds like it will give the Unit a nice look and emphasise the "forced out of Dis, picked up where they have fallen or dragged from their graves" theme.

Thank you very much for the detailed description how you are doing your bases (this one is as great as I expected ;)).

I realy like the glowing of the lantern, ties very well with his skintone and shows somehow the unatural energies that chain him to the mortal world once again. The shield is awesome, the wood looks very natural, impressive! I even like the Skull and I am not realy a fan of skulls but the bone colour that you´ve chosen makes it look very realistic.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, great paintjob!

Great Paintjob! Now I am sure that I am not sure which skintone I prefer - the living skin underlines the impression of "straight out of Dis" but the ghostly glowing blue looks stunning, as I said before now I don´t think they would look out of place when mixed in a unit.

Keep them coming Orlando!

for this one I've tried to blend the human and demon skin, with a blue wash over the human skin, and more skin colour in the mix for the blue skin, and I think it's worked reasonably well

Impressive!

As you´ve guessed correctly the one with the Scutum is my favourite (great to see his roots [the Scutum] and his new Destiny [The Lantern] so close together, the Mini realy tells a story [well, all of them do, but his story is the clearest ;D] but all of them are incredible! I realy like the blending of the two tones that you´ve applied on the latest Demighosts - Awesome!

And Again your basework is stunning, the dead area underneath them adds another Layer of Depth to them - Great Idea, Great Conversions, Great Bases and a Great Paintjob - to make it short: an Orlando ;D.

Keep them coming and thank you very much for sharing those pictures!

The Mesokolossi of the Atlantes stride forth to war (bringing a couple of pesky pigeons from Infamy Miniatures with them), these are the metal versions

Image

Image

Image

I decided on a simple tile base for them with a few fallen leaves (symbolism, lost empires, autumn, twilight of the race and everything), painted with some totally unrealistic (but cool looking) lighting effects on each tile rather than across the whole base

The main paints are Vallejo Bronze and Brass, and GW Boltgun Metal, Mithril SIlver and Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil washes

Took me a long time to comment, but here I go again!

The Mesokolossi are awesome, and I realy like the pigeons - a nice touch to put a symbol of war on those warriors ;D.

But I have to agree and disagree with you at the same time - I agree, the lighting effects are looking stunning, and I disagree, they are extremely realistic - that´s just the way an ancient, persumably magical nuclear reactor inside an animated statue would glow, believe my firsthand experience - I´ve seen many of them.

And another point where I have to disagree - the bases aren´t simple, they are great. I like the mosaic and the cracks (are they painted or sculpted?) and as you´ve said, the fallen leaves are a great symbol to show that they serve a fallen "Empire".

Great work as always, thanks a lot for sharing!
